During the letter to parliament Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen informs the House of Representatives about the diversity of data subjects within the mobility sector. It is expected that the opportunities and challenges of 'data in mobility' will continue to develop rapidly.

Digitization of mobility ensures that more and more personal data is in circulation. Processing this must be done in a responsible manner, in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In the mobility sector, the government wants to act in accordance with the GDPR. In practice, this means, among other things, that they only collect personal data for a clearly defined purpose, do not collect more data than necessary and do not store it longer than necessary.

The principle of 'privacy by design' is also applied in projects, so that the right balance is sought as early as possible between what data is needed, for what purpose and what processing risks there are.

The government also wants to promote that companies ensure the correct processing of personal data and provide users with control and transparency, so that they are sufficiently aware of the consequences of processing data.

As stated in the Coalition Agreement, the ambition is a smart and sustainable mobility system, the parts of which connect seamlessly. The individual modalities are no longer central, but the entire chain, and mobility is increasingly driven by demand instead of supply. Data offers opportunities to realize this ambition.

By making data fully interchangeable between modalities, travelers and logistics parties gain insight into the optimal chain journey and the supply and demand of mobility are better coordinated, so that the total mobility system can be optimized.

At the same time, data also increases complexity. In order to achieve policy goals, the government will have to make more and more agreements with companies about sharing data. In addition, responsible use of data requires an active government role, for example to guarantee market access, protect privacy and achieve secure data exchange.
