The plans for Ghent Sint-Pieters station are being adjusted. SNCB decided this after constructive consultation with the City of Ghent. A new roof is being developed that guarantees the comfort for the travelers and that fits in architecturally with the already built roof. In addition, extra attention is paid to the quality of the proposed underground bicycle parking facilities.

NMBS decides after a constructive consultation with the City of Ghent

The city council of Ghent previously did not agree with these amended plans and argued for the maintenance of a functional and attractive station concept, sufficient space and comfort for the users and retention of sufficient quality space for cyclists. Among other things, the proposal was made to tender the further work in phases in order to spread the investment costs more.

“It is good that the Gent Sint-Pieters file has been unblocked. We can now move forward again, with adapted plans that are worthy of a city like Ghent and that benefit the many users of the station. ”

According to ships of Mobility Filip Watteeuw (Green), the Gentenaars get what they are entitled to. "Ghent in the twenty-first century absolutely needs a pleasant and smoothly functioning main station”Said Watteeuw.

All project partners support the proposed changes to the design. They are making every effort to submit the complete environmental permit application on that basis in early 2020. The public inquiry will follow.

Mathias De Clercq (Open VLD) made a breakthrough. "I brought the right people together to work constructively." With success, for the time being: after a meeting at the city hall, NMBS boss Sophie Dutordoir decided last week to adjust the plans.

The NMBS will now design a new roof together with our people, which will be of sufficient quality. Architecturally, this will be in line with the already built covering for platforms 9 to 12. The problem of the bicycle shed will also be solved and an investigation will be carried out to see whether expansion is possible. The most important thing is that this file is unblocked and that all noses are pointing in the same direction. SNCB has indicated that it will submit the adjusted plans in 2020.
