There is a car park at more than 400 train stations, at 53 stations of which you now have to pay to lose your car. This year 6 car parks were or will be paid. An emergency, says NMBS. But the local mayors disagree.

According to Elizabeth Ackaert  the parking pressure at the public transport company at the station car parks became too great. Many commuters lost their car there and were forced to move to streets near the station.

“A large proportion of the people who use the station parking are people who live very close to the station. We want to encourage them, by making the parking fee, to come to the station in a different way, ”says Dimitri Temmerman of the NMBS in a response to the VRT news service.

But according to the railways, the car parks are also often used by people who do not take the train, for example people who work near the station.

Gino Debroux, Mayor of Landen

The mayors are not set up with the NMBS measure. Gino Debroux (sp.a) is a ship in Landen and thinks it is not possible that the parking has become paying.

“As a city, we have invested in refurbishing the station environment. NMBS now makes the parking fee. The residents actually pay twice: once via the city tax for the refurbishment of the station neighborhood, and now for the parking lot. ”

The mayor acknowledges that the parking pressure is enormous and that it causes inconvenience. But he sees another solution: "The NMBS must provide more parking spaces. Every day, 3600 people get on the train in Landen, and there are only 600 parking spaces. Making the parking pay is not going to solve this. "
