It is the first commercial airline to fly under the same name since its inception. In its new brand film, the company looks back on an impressive history and especially shows the progress over the various decades. It underlines the evolution of aviation and that of society as a whole. From the first commercial flight on May 17, 1920 to the present, the company has always had one goal in mind: progress.

Over the years, KLM's blue blood has amazed several generations with the magic of flying. The new film tells the story of three generations of the same family who worked at the Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij to take care of and serve travelers, from the early years to the present. The first two women, mother and daughter, are inspired to fly and are both flight attendants, followed by granddaughter of the first generation, who enters the cockpit and takes off as the pilot of KLM's most recent aircraft, the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner.

Boet Kreiken, Executive Vice President Customer Experience at KLM:

VToday we celebrate KLM's 100th birthday, a great time to talk about what we really stand for. We believe in bringing people together. Taking care of our passengers. We also stand for continuous progress. Progress in aviation, of course, but also broader progress. And, we never forget the magic of flying. The magical feeling that we pass on to many generations of customers, fans and employees. ”

Simulated history

The film takes you through KLM's evolution from 1919 to the present, including images of classic planes such as the 1934 Fokker FII, the 4 Douglas DC-1949, the 747 Boeing 1975 and ends with the brand new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. All brought to life with the original uniforms, props and other details from that period.

To simulate everything as accurately as possible, some original aircraft were used, sets were built up as it actually looked in the past and archive footage with special film techniques was added. The film was conceived and made by KLM's permanent creative partner, DDB Unlimited. The DDB Unlimited team has worked with top director Ismael ten Heuvel and historians at KLM's Heritage Center to accurately recreate everything historically in detail.

fly responsibly

Although there are 100 years of stories to tell, KLM also likes to look ahead to the future. Earlier this year, the company launched a global action plan for sustainable travel called “Fly Responsibly”. KLM has taken the lead and is asking the entire aviation industry to join forces, as a whole, to create a more sustainable future.
