The Netherlands has a charge point position worldwide. For example, in 2016 the Netherlands was in second place worldwide with a market share of newly sold electric cars of 6,4%. In addition, 12% of the public charging infrastructure worldwide can be found in the Netherlands. The Netherlands also ranks in the field of open ICT standards for charging infrastructure and smart charging.

However, that does not mean that we can sit back. The major breakthrough of electric driving is yet to come. There is therefore still plenty of room for the development of Dutch companies. Consider, for example, opportunities in the field of charging infrastructure, electric buses, trucks and Light Electric Vehicles ”, asays Bertholt Leeftink Director-General for Business and Innovation Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate in the report on the Silvering of Earning Potential for Electric Transport.

Commissioned by RVO.nl, the biennial report “capitalizing on the earnings potential of electric transportPrepared over the years 2016-2017. The aim of the report is to provide insight into the economic development of the electric transport sector. This monitoring is partly based on quantitative data and partly it is a qualitative description of the developments.

Where necessary, the government supports the breakthrough of electric driving, including through tax measures, the top sector policy, the implementation of European directives, including those in the field of standards, the Green Deal Publicly Accessible Charging Infrastructure and the Partners in International Business program. This allows the market to further seize its opportunities.

the number of charging points is growing to 1,7 million

This market is expected to continue to grow rapidly. The cabinet wants all new cars to be emission-free by 2030. This could mean that there is a fleet of 1,9 million electric vehicles. This would require 1,7 million charging points.

Companies from all clusters show an increase in employment. Employment in electric mobility services is taking off as more and more carriers, such as Arriva, Qbuzz and Transdev subsidiaries Connexxion and Hermes, use electric buses.

The use of electric buses is also causing an increase in the cluster 'New construction and conversion of electric vehicles', where large companies in particular have increased employment. We also see a sharp increase in employment in companies affiliated with charging infrastructure. For example, there are now eleven national providers in charging infrastructure, while many local installers are involved in the cluster. Dutch charging infrastructure companies such as NewMotion, EVBox, Fastned, Allego and Ecotap are also active internationally.
