In the coming months, a self-service bicycle parking concept will be implemented at six bicycle parking facilities along Amsterdam's North-South line, namely: Buikslotermeerplein, Rokin, Ceintuurbaan, Ferdinand Bolstraat, Beursplein and Reguliersdwarsstraat. Siemens Smart Infrastructure, in collaboration with its partner IP Parking, has been appointed by the Municipality of Amsterdam as the main contractor for the modernization project.
The bicycle parking concept is in line with the aim of the Municipality of Amsterdam to tackle the mobility issue in a sustainable manner. Stimulating bicycle use and reducing 'stray bicycles' in the vicinity of public transport hubs. Thanks in part to the first 24 hours of free bicycle parking, the concept contributes to the liveability of the city. Because of the environmental benefits, the City of Amsterdam has received a subsidy from the EU. The new systems should be ready for use by mid-2020.
Siemens is responsible for design, implementation, remote monitoring and maintenance. This in close collaboration with its partner IP Parking. Municipalities also want to increase accessibility. The self-service bicycle parking makes it easier and more attractive to cycle more often. Earlier research had already shown that the self-service bicycle parking facilities at NS train stations, which were also realized by Siemens Smart Infrastructure, showed markedly improved customer satisfaction and a significant increase in the use of the bicycle parking facilities.
The self-service bicycle parking concept is a user-friendly, safe and cost-efficient concept for the automated parking of bicycles. Parking is free for the first 24 hours. Checking in and out is done with a bank card or OV chip card. Subscription holders receive a tag on the bicycle, which makes check-in and check-out automatic. Searching for a free space is also a thing of the past: cyclists can see where there is still space on digital signs in the garage. There will be signs on bicycle routes along the six parking spaces, indicating which parking spaces are full and which are not.
The renewed bicycle sheds offer cyclists more modernization, comfort, convenience and a safer feeling. This starts with the inviting appearance of the entrance area: transparency and overview through transparent materials. The cyclist immediately sees where to go and does not have the feeling of being locked up. The system is used both in stables with an administrator and in stalls where no administrator is present.
There is camera surveillance with image registration in the entrance area and in the parking facility. There is also an intercom for assistance calls to the Siemens control room as part of the customer interaction terminal. The gate can be operated remotely. The emergency button near the gates makes it possible to escape in the event of incidents / emergencies.
