Public charging stations used a quarter more electricity in the first ten months of 2019 than in all of 2018, according to figures from evdata.nl that keeps track of the current state of electric charging. Power consumption has been measured in the four major cities and in dozens of municipalities in South and North Holland, Utrecht and Flevoland.

According to the BNR web editorial, the successful sales of the Tesla Model 3 are the main cause of this increase, but according to Professor of Energy and Innovation Robert van den Hoed of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Tesla will not be the only driver and there will be an increasing supply of electric cars.

Size of batteries changes charging behavior

The larger size of the batteries in particular is decisive for the development, says Van den Hoed. Thanks to larger batteries, more is driven and the range also increases. 

“It is less urgent at the charging station: you used to charge when you could, now you can plan that strategically. Larger vehicles can also charge faster, the ratio between charging stations and the amount of electric cars that you can operate with them, becomes more favorable, "says Van den Hoed.
