On the penultimate day of the Brussels motor show, Extinction Rebellion takes action against what they call it “Lie Salon”. We are ordinary people from all over the country and of all ages who are deeply concerned about the climate and environmental crisis. The activists can choose from different actions, from low-threshold, such as handing out flyers, to more advanced, such as gluing themselves to cars.

greenwashing of the auto industry

Extinction rebellion previously appealed to everyone to participate in an action of civil disobedience taking place in Brussels. The action group wants to infiltrate in small groups with hundreds of rebels at the motor show. At different times and different places, both inside and outside the exhibition buildings, they perform a swarm of small disruptive actions.

Security then runs in all directions and is unable to keep everything under control. A cat and mouse game between shiny cars and 70.000 visitors.

Each group of rebels acts autonomously. There is a choice of a pre-provided menu with different actions. Each group prepares itself for its own choice of action, executes it as best it can, according to its own dynamics, with its own wishes, but all groups contribute to one collective story:

“We are here to tell the truth about the auto industry, to disprove the lies it continues to tell the public in order to protect its interests and increase its profits. The Motor Show is the industry's foremost propaganda tool, the best place and time to sell lies to customers about the true environmental impact of individual motoring. We are here to correct this deceptive picture and disrupt greenwashing. ”

Extinction Rebellion wants to avoid things getting out of hand, such as an action in Brussels in October where the police arrested activists.

“We now have observers who will monitor the behavior of the police. And we count on the other visitors as our protectors. I don't think the organizers would like to see violence in the salon itself. ”
