Transport company Connexxion, part of Transdev Netherlands, chooses to place cameras in 156 new electric buses instead of normal exterior mirrors. This should make the driver more comfortable, make driving safer and reduce damage. Connexxion is the first transport company in the Netherlands to use cameras in this way.

All Connexxion vehicles have two HD cameras on the outside and two screens in the bus. Connexxion's parent company, Transdev, has ordered 156 buses from bus builder Ebusco, for the Amstelland-Meerlanden and Haarlem-Ijmond concessions. The buses will be put into use at the end of this year and drivers will start using the cameras immediately.

Cameras are installed on the outside of the Connexxion buses that Transdev has ordered. The driver can see the images from the camera on two monitors.
The screen on the left is mounted on the 'A' pole in the bus. The screen showing the right side of the vehicle is mounted more in the center. Both positions are within the normal driver's field of vision. The position of these monitors may also differ for a different type of bus or a different supplier.

Before Transdev decided to stop using mirrors, an entire team thoroughly tested the system. The drivers were part of the test and were immediately enthusiastic.

"They immediately said that the image with the camera system was better than normal mirrors, especially in the dark and at dusk," said Sumir Faruqi.
