The corona virus is gripping our country. While anyone who can work from home, rescuers go to work day after day to help others. Ambulance driver Raymond Zuidwijk works in the The Hague region and we made a phone call in response to a beautiful piece in National Signposting Service.

“It has been buffeting the last week, but everyone on the shift that runs days after day is enthusiastic about it. Nobody takes days off and everyone takes good care of each other. As a team we work together to make the best of it, ”says Raymond Zuidwijk.

In the 28 years that Raymond Zuidwijk (49) has been on the ambulance, he has traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers, most in and around his hometown of The Hague. We would almost forget the corona virus that ambulance drivers also have to turn out every day for completely different things. When you arrive in special suits to pick up an elderly lady, explain why we take all these extra measures to protect everyone and everything.

“We do notice that there is a shortage and urgent measures need to be taken. Lack of face masks, aprons and disinfectants are the main concerns we have now and they need to be addressed, ”a concerned Raymond told me during our conversation.

sail blindly on digital navigation

As an ambulance driver, Raymond Zuidwijk cannot just blindly navigate digital navigation. You need to know the maps of your work area by heart. And on the highway, physical signage helps to maneuver just a little faster.

When colleagues speak to him for another interview, he prepares for the driving test that he will take on possible new colleagues. As an old hand in the profession, he is now also involved as a trainer in the selection procedure for drivers. He likes to tell them about the advanced digital navigation system on board and why they cannot go along the roads without signage.
