Second-hand car sales rose enormously in May, with approximately 111.146 second-hand second-hand cars sold. This is 5 percent less compared to last year, last year there were about 117.000 in the month of May. So it is certainly going in the right direction, despite the corona crisis. Due to the consequences of the corona crisis, car sales have been on its way for months. In April, second-hand car sales fell by more than 26 percent from April 2019. In March, sales decreased by 2019 percent from March 14. A whopping 6,4 percent fewer used cars were sold in the first five months of this year compared to 2019, during the same period.

“In the meantime, used-car sales have returned to the old level,” concludes industry association BOVAG. In the first five months of 2020, the car companies sold 506.517 second-hand passenger cars, 6,4 percent less than in the same period a year. Private individuals sold 73.443 used cars between themselves last month; an increase of 17,6. C2C sales through May were up 7,5 percent. According to BOVAG chairman Han ten Broeke, these are mainly old shopping cars that are bought by public transport avoiders who are not so concerned with safety and the environment: “Frequent public transport travelers want to have access to an alternative immediately and at the lowest possible cost. If safety, sustainability and comfort do not play a role for a while, you will of course soon end up with the cheap, old shopping cart belonging to the neighbor, distant cousin or unknown fellow-citizen via an internet advertisement ”, says Ten Broeke.

These are significant losses for the car industry. Research Commissioned by the trade association BOVAG, it appears that many travelers now prefer to travel individually than travel by public transport. This is to, among other things, reduce the risk of becoming infected with the coronavirus. In this survey, 1185 public transport travelers were asked for their opinion. About half indicated that they opt for alternative transport to Public Transport. Of that number, 57 percent said they would like to travel by car again.
