It has been a busy time on the Dutch cycle paths. Many people take bicycles or e-bikes during this era. This is to avoid public transport, among other things. Wearing a mouth mask and keeping a meter and a half away is a reason for many people to prefer cycling. Until the beginning of September, the government's request will probably remain for everyone to work from home as much as possible. This ensures a quiet morning rush hour on the Dutch roads, but not for the Dutch cycle paths. The e-bike is a popular means of transport, according to a study by ALD Automotive.

“We thought we had the time to tackle the design of roads and cycle paths, but we no longer have that time due to the corona crisis. Before the corona crisis, we already had full cycle paths and more and more two-wheelers with different speeds. '

Unfortunately, the Dutch cycle paths have not yet been designed for this, this must change soon. According to ANWB-director Frits van Bruggen, more cycling paths must be constructed by the municipalities to prevent road fatalities. A survey a few years ago showed that more than a quarter of all Dutch people feel unsafe on bicycles. Now that it is getting busier on the bike paths, more accidents also happen. Road bikes, e-bikes, e-step, they all ride on the bike path at different speeds, this is very dangerous. That is why there must be more space for bicycle paths in the Netherlands. Frits van Bruggen also believes that there should be speed limits for, for example, fast E-bikes, 20 km per hour on the bicycle paths and 45 km per hour on the bicycle highways between cities. The Minister of Infrastructure has released half a billion euros for road safety, let's hope that this money improves safety on the Dutch cycle paths.

'Municipalities can claim that money if they also finance half of it themselves. I am very concerned that this will not work. The corona virus has caused a health crisis, but it has also caused an economic crisis. Villages and cities will say: the money for road safety has run out. Then we accept as a country that there are more deaths and serious injuries. '
