The events industry has been hit hard by the consequences of the corona measures. Fairs and congresses are still on hold. Currently, events are still banned until perhaps September 1. Is this really necessary or are there possibilities for trade fairs and congresses to 'just' continue during this corona time? I have asked several exhibition and conference locations a number of questions about their vision on this. Susanne Blaas from Rotterdam Ahoy gave the following answer:

What is the impact of the corona crisis on your company?

It is enormous. We went into a healthy corona crisis financially, getting ready for the biggest TV show in the world, the Eurovision Song Contest, and now everything has been standing still since mid-March.

Are the fairs and congresses going on right now?

No, the government has prescribed that events are currently allowed for up to 30 people. From July 1, most likely 100 people. We start up things on a very small scale, but that is nothing with the numbers we normally receive.

If not, are you working on solutions and ideas, so that fairs can continue in a different way?

Yes, we work together with various industry associations and platforms within the event industry with which we create protocols to facilitate and organize fairs and events in a responsible manner. See for example: www.ahoy.nl/information/security. We are also in discussion with the ministries in The Hague from the Alliance of Event Builders to discuss what is possible.

Do you have a vision or solution for the government that allows the fairs and congresses to continue?

Yes, there are various plans put on paper by the Alliance. In our view, not all types of events should be brought together.

Do you receive government support?

We want to show as much as possible that we can keep our pants up. But of course this industry has been hit hard. Current schemes such as the NOW scheme are extremely helpful in getting through this time. Depending on the duration of the impact for this industry, we would like to look at industry-specific support with the government. But we're not primarily asking for money. What we, as event builders, mainly ask for is space and confidence to be able to get back to work in a responsible and safe manner. In doing so, following the rules of the government and RIVM.

What is your vision of the future as long as there is a corona crisis?

We draw attention to the importance of sports, culture and entertainment in our society. We want to consult with local and national governments and focus on what will be possible again, subject to conditions.

The core message from the Alliance:

Yes, health comes first. But experiencing happiness is also essential for a person. And that is exactly what is in events. They provide togetherness, connection, relaxation, sharing experiences with loved ones. Don't shave all major events together, look at what is possible in this new phase of the corona crisis. As a sector, we have always had a great sense of responsibility for our visitors, artists, athletes and employees in terms of health and safety. We are experts in crowd control. We can organize this like no other in the right way. The events sector represents a major economic interest: 1% of the gross national product.
