With the introduction of the new Flemish taxi decree at the beginning of this year, the red carpet was rolled out for Uber. Antwerp, Ghent and Leuven supported the #TrueCostofUber Coalition in an open letter. This coalition argues that by 2025, Uber must commit to becoming 100% emission-free and driving at least 2030% shared rides by 50. Although active in Brussels for several years, Uber has not yet gained a foothold in Flanders.

another blow to the taxi sector

Trade union ABVV / BTB states that after the new taxi decree and the corona crisis, the consequences of which in the taxi sector are gradually becoming visible, some large cities decided to hit the taxi sector again and open their territory to Uber and similar companies. Under the motto of a mobile and emission-free city, an entire sector is thrown into chaos, with an enormous increase in taxis and thus even busier streets and less quality journeys for customers as a result.

Due to its aggressive pricing policy, the taxi market is disrupted wherever Uber is present. Real taxi drivers, self-employed persons and salaried employees are victims of this. BTB states that even if there is not yet a monopoly, customers will also see prices for a ride go up, even if there is not yet a monopoly. And the UBER driver is getting an ever smaller share of the pie, because there is a need to make a profit. The arrival of Uber will offer no added value to anyone, not to the customers and certainly not to the taxi sector.

BTB continues to stand up for the taxi sectorr

BTB has scandalized that Uber is being welcomed in cities where “progressive” parties (in particular sp.a and Groen) are at the wheel. BTB will therefore not fail to make these “progressive” parties interfere and demand that they clearly admit color. As long as Uber does not take his responsibility, does not follow the rules and treats his employees correctly, he will find BTB on his way. They will continue to stand up for the taxi industry and its employees and will continue to fight against Uber's unfair competition.
