Holidaymakers who travel to Europe by plane from the Netherlands this summer should take into account higher prices than in previous years for luggage. Taking a suitcase on vacation has increased by nine percent since last year. Airlines have increased their fares by nearly XNUMX percent in the past three years.

With 'the large baggage survey', Beslist.nl came up with a comparison of baggage rates for thirty-five different airlines operating European flights from the Netherlands. On the website https://www.beslist.nl/info/bagage.html you will find the tables and the findings of the research of decided.nl. Many airlines use the formula L + B + D = 115, according to decided.nl. This means that the length, width and depth dimensions may not exceed 115 centimeters. This makes 55x40x20 centimeters the most common hand luggage size.

As far as hand luggage is concerned, according to Decide.nl you are 'best' off with the airline Iberia, you can take one piece of hand luggage with you there with a maximum size of 56x45x25 centimeters, there is no limit in terms of weight. You can also take a laptop bag or handbag on board with them. With the Irish airline Ryan Air you are the 'worst' in terms of hand luggage. Your hand luggage may not be larger than 45x25x20 centimetres. If this is the case, you will pay €10 to €25 per single journey for your hand luggage. In 2018 this rate was €6 to €10, so this rate has almost doubled.

Beslist.nl also compared the baggage rate for hold baggage of ten different airlines flying from the Netherlands elsewhere in Europe. The costs for checking in a small suitcase of 15 kilos online increased by 2017 percent between 2020 and 16, to an average of €25,73. For a slightly heavier suitcase of 23 kilos, an average of € 31,89 must be paid, an increase of no less than 22 percent. Wizz Air is the leader in terms of the biggest increase in checked baggage prices, their flexible rate from €21 to €68 what they charge for a bag has increased to €30 to €109. This amounts to an increase of no less than €25. Most airlines use flexible rates for the transport of luggage, the rate differs per route and per time of travel.
