In a letter to the Amsterdam population, Mayor Femke Halsema calls on the Amsterdammers to be extra careful in the coming weeks by traveling as little as possible, keeping their distance from each other and limiting social contacts as much as possible. The mayor describes that the new measures are a painful step backwards, but that there is no other choice. Halsema asks its residents to be strong, to persevere and to continue to support each other.

“Lots of people have struggled to keep their distance from each other recently. However understandable it may be, it is unfortunately the cause of the increasing number of infections. The virus is no less contagious or less dangerous now than it was six months ago. It can still make you very sick too. And carelessness can still cost someone else's life, ”said Halsema in her letter.

“We don't just do it for ourselves. We do it for the people in healthcare, for the future of our city, for the people we love. Let's try to protect each other against the virus as best we can, and look after each other even more in the near future. ”
