It took 1246 pages to put a meager chord on paper. Many sectors will feel Brexit and ultimately experience it as a hard Brexit. The most visible will be the long waiting times that arise at the border crossing due to checks on documents and the cargo itself. There is no economic profit, only loss. Products in Europe are becoming more expensive for the British and vice versa for the Europeans.

extra paperwork

Apart from some minor suffering for Ziggo viewers who will no longer be able to watch Ziggo-Go in Great Britain after January 1 as a result of Brexit, there are bigger problems. Companies now have to prove with EU certificates that their products meet European standards. The United Kingdom also has such certificates and they do not appear to connect one to one. For many companies that want to export, this means obtaining the certificate twice and incurring additional costs.

By removing barriers, by enabling companies to operate on a European scale, we can best compete with the United States, Japan and other emerging economic powers in Asia and elsewhere.

Now just the opposite is happening. In order to absorb the economic consequences, the EU is in the process of establishing a separate Brexit fund worth € 5 billion. The United Kingdom had to regain its sovereignty for British Prime Minister Johnson. But in practice it will be disappointing.

losers

Brexit only has losers. British diplomas are no longer automatically recognized and companies are losing their automatic access or passport to the European market. For the time being, the only conclusion seems to be that the trade deal represents a loss for both sides, and that the EU has tried to limit the greatest damage to its own internal market.

economie

Groningen students who want to go to the United Kingdom for an exchange can no longer make use of a subsidy from the Erasmus program. The Erasmus program itself will continue to exist and is still important to the RUG. The consequences of Brexit for the technology industry have eased slightly due to the trade deal, but are still enormous. In the longer term, an economic downturn in the United Kingdom will reduce demand.

sports world

The Brexit, on which the government of Prime Minister Johnson and the European Union signed an agreement on Thursday, will also change the sports world. From January 1, European footballers under the age of 18 may no longer be contracted by the English clubs. The contracts of the women players who are already active in England, if they have applied for a work permit in time, are respected.

Belgian chocolate

Luxury companies must also fear the consequences of Brexit. Not only the export of Belgian chocolate, but also the import of clothing based on wool, cashmere, silk and Vicuña wool. Any export from Brussels to the United Kingdom will be accompanied by customs procedures. This means a lot of administrative work, but there will also be import tariffs.
