In 2020, consumers purchased more than 2 million second-hand passenger cars for the first time ever, according to figures from BOVAG and data supplier RDC. As a result of the corona measures, the need for individual transport was high and, unlike the sale of new cars, the used car trade boomed after the backlash during the first corona wave.

With 2.025.309 used cars traded, the sales level was almost 55.000 units - or 2,8 percent - higher than in 2019. Nearly 1,3 million of the used cars were sold by the specialist trade. Last year, consumers bought 3,5 percent more used cars from BOVAG car companies than a year earlier. With nearly 1,05 million units and an 81,5 percent market share, used gasoline vehicles were still the most popular in specialist retailers. The share of diesels fell from 14 to 12 percent, while both the market share and the total number of second-hand electric cars sold doubled compared to 2019, to 1,1 percent and over 14.000 units respectively.

UTRECHT IN THE MIN

Car companies faced declines of up to 26 percent in March, April and May of last year. Due to the great need for forms of individual transport, used car sales showed a strong recovery in the summer months. The second wave of corona caused small declines again in November and December, but over the whole calendar year the sales counter was slightly in the plus. With the exception of Utrecht, more used cars were purchased in all provinces, with Overijssel as the leader with a plus of 6 percent compared to 2019. In Gelderland the increase was 4,6 percent and in Groningen 4 percent, while Utrecht residents were just 2020 percent bought second-hand cars. The BOVAG reports this on them website through this message.
