In 2020, the highest number of new motorcycles will be sold in the Netherlands in more than a decade. The counter ended last year at 14.622 units, an increase of 4,7 percent compared to 2019, when 13.962 motorcycles were registered, according to the official figures from RAI Association, BOVAG and RDC. In addition, the specialist trade sold an absolute record number of 52.175 second-hand motorcycles.

The corona crisis is gripping society. This has a major influence on travel behavior. Since the crisis started last March, the need for individual transport has grown. This is not only noticeable in the sale of bicycles and scooters, but also in the registrations of new and second-hand motorcycles. Since 2009, never before have so many motorcycles been sold as in 2020. This despite the international lockdowns in the spring, which halted the supply of parts and the production and distribution of two-wheelers worldwide. As a result, new engines already on order could not be built and stores were not stocked. From the summer months onwards, a clear catch-up was seen, which continued until the end of the year. In December 2020, for example, almost 140 percent more new engines were registered than in December 2019 (582 units to 243 units).

Motor companies in the Netherlands also had a high demand for used cars. Never before has the specialist trade sold more than 50.000 second-hand motorcycles in a calendar year. 2020 ended with a total of 52.175 used motorcycles sold, 11 percent more than in 2019, when specialist retailers delivered 47.053 used engines. In the used car trade, after a significant dip during the corona outbreak in March, it was clear from April that there was a great need for individual transport. Last December, almost a quarter more second-hand motorcycles were sold than in the same month in 2019.

ENGINE FITS URBAN MOBILITY POLICY

RAI Vereniging and BOVAG are happy with the popularity of the motorcycle. Motorcycling is 'in'. People not only opt for the great experience of motorcycling, but also for the practical side. The motor is ideally suited to move from A to B quickly, safely, cleanly and hygienically in today's society. The potential is enormous, as only half of the 5 million Dutch motorcycle license owners currently own their own motorcycle. Moreover, the motor fits into an urban mobility policy, where saving space is becoming increasingly important and fewer parking spaces are available for cars. The sector is also accelerating its efforts to improve sustainability with the development of cleaner engines. Next year, only the cleanest Euro XNUMX engines will be available from the factory, new BOVAG on their website through this post.
