Because traffic in Rotterdam is one of the biggest causes of air pollution in the city, the municipality is promoting electric transport. The municipality of Rotterdam reports that they have opened smart charging plazas at four locations in the city. These public and smart charging plazas can accommodate thirty-six electric cars. The municipality of Rotterdam now has a total of 5 charging areas for electric cars. The smart charging plazas are located on Stieltjesstraat, Cor Kieboomplein, Nassauhaven Noord, Schiedamse Vesthof and Veerhaven and are always accessible. With this, the municipality is taking a big step towards a healthy and sustainable city.
These charging plazas are part of the Smart Charging Plaza Proeftuin of the National Charging Infrastructure Agenda (NAL). The pilot project is subsidized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and supported by the National Charging Infrastructure Knowledge Platform (NKL Nederland), the knowledge and innovation center of the network operators ELaadNL and the OverMorgen project bureau. Smart software on the charging plazas ensures a good distribution of the green electricity over the connected cars. That is why these squares are called smart charging plazas. A number of parking spaces on these smart charging plazas are exclusively intended for electric cars, and there is also enough space for non-electric cars to park.
'We want to use the charging plazas to make it as attractive as possible for people to drive electrically. That helps us solve the problem of air pollution in the city. The charging plazas also ensure efficient use of sustainably generated energy. ' explains Alderman Arno Bonte of the Municipality of Rotterdam.
