Sophie Dutordoir and Minister Georges Gilkinet have reached an agreement on the planned closure of 44 ticket offices in the stations. The NMBS does not deviate from the earlier decision, but meets the Gilkinet by making the buildings available for other activities in the stations. Last week, Sophie Dutordoir indicated that she no longer had faith in mobility minister Georges Gilkinet. In a hefty letter, that leaked, railway boss Sophie Dutordoir talks about a “serious breach of trust”.

In the case of non-profitable activities, SNCB makes its station available in the new agreement at a price that corresponds to its actual operating costs. It is therefore not the intention that we make a profit on this. In this context, NMBS is thinking of social and cultural activities.

Putting the changed customer habits NMBS urges to accelerate digitization and adaptation of its sales channels. For example, digital products and sales via digital channels are further developed. The number of stations with ticket offices and their opening hours will also be adjusted in the course of 2021 to the evolution of ticket use and the transport plan. The reception of travelers remains assured everywhere. At the same time, NMBS continues to focus strongly on (sanitary) safety, supply, accessibility, services, digitization and sustainability.
