The latest figures from SBB show that currently 20.493 of the more than 507.000 MBO students are currently looking for a suitable internship or apprenticeship. Especially in healthcare and the hospitality industry, sectors that are under pressure from the corona crisis for various reasons, shortages have increased further in recent months. There are also concerns about the increase in internship shortages for students following the entrance training and level 2. It is precisely these students that need extra attention in this crisis.
SBB is therefore pleased with the National Education Program that the cabinet presented last week, in which, among other things, the subsidy scheme for Practical Learning will be increased and extra money will be made available to extend the internship offensive. SBB, in collaboration with education and business, will continue to make every effort to recruit additional internships and apprenticeships in the coming academic year.
From the current figures SBB shows that there are large differences in internship and apprenticeship shortages between sectors and regions. Rising deficits can mainly be seen in sectors that have also been severely affected by the cabinet's lockdown measures. For example, the shortage in hospitality, which includes catering and tourism, has now risen to 2.195 internships and apprenticeships.

The sector where there are currently the most shortages is healthcare (3.650 shortages). Due to the high workload, there is too little capacity to supervise students. The shortage of these places has increased by 66 percent for MBO nursing, for example. But creative solutions are also being sought in regions. There is, for example, the hybrid learning environment where the practice of the care institution and education are organized close to each other, so that the supervision of students can take place properly and efficiently despite the pressure on care. These good examples deserve to be followed throughout healthcare.
