The Financial Times recently labeled Swapfiets as one of the 10 fastest growing European companies of 2021. The world's first 'bicycle as a service' company is now also linking sustainable ambitions to that growth. Swapfiets aims to have all bicycles with the iconic blue front tire fully circular by 2025.

Swapfiets believes that the old 'take-make-waste' approach to producing, selling and consuming products should be transformed into a circular economy. By fully focusing on repairing, reusing, refurbishing and recycling bicycle parts, Swapfiets proves that bicycles can also become more circular and sustainable. For example, the Deluxe 7, currently the most popular Swapfiets in Europe, is already 88% circular.

Richard Burger, co-founder of Swapfiets: “It is a challenge for us to have fully circular bicycles on the road by 2025. At the same time, we see that this is the best way for us if we want to continue working on a sustainable tour towards our goal of getting as many people in cities as possible by bike ”.

Currently, a zero-rubber-waste guarantee already applies to all Swapfiets bicycles. Not a single piece of rubber ends up in the waste at the end of the life cycle of a Swapfiets. The Swapfiets Deluxe 7 is currently twice as circular as an equivalent new bicycle. Nevertheless, full circularity remains a challenge; 12 percent of a Swapfiets still ends up in the waste at the end of the ride. The challenge will be to make saddles and brake cables sustainable and to move away from certain raw materials, such as minerals that are used in lubrication. Swapfiets is therefore entering into collaboration with experts to take further steps in the field of circularity.
