Neste, the world's largest producer of renewable diesel and sustainable jet fuel, has joined the eFuel Alliance, an interest group dedicated to the industrial production of synthetic liquid fuels from renewable sources. Based in Berlin and Brussels, the eFuel Alliance brings together companies and organizations that share the goal of developing and promoting energy- and bio-based synthetic liquid fuels in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport.

Today, more than 1,3 billion vehicles worldwide are powered by conventional combustion engines. In addition, there are approximately 22.000 aircraft for which no cost-effective technical alternative is in sight. These existing fleets will continue to form the basis of our mobility in the coming decades. Low-carbon fuels are the only sustainable solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing combustion engines.

“Synthetic eFuels and sustainable biofuels are needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport and help the EU meet its 2050 targets. With Neste as a new member, the alliance gains an innovative leader and a strong global partner in renewable fuels. Neste's entry also shows that the eFuels Alliance is gaining momentum at the European level, which is a key goal in our efforts to change European regulations, ”said Ralf Diemer, CEO of the eFuels Alliance.

Already, customers using Neste MY Renewable Diesel ™, made from 100% renewable raw materials, can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. The high-quality fuel is a drop-in solution, which means it can be used without modifications to existing diesel engines and infrastructure. The fuel is available to customers in Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the US states of California and Oregon. The method used to calculate life cycle emissions and emission savings complies with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28 / EC), according to Next on their website.

“We are pleased to be part of the alliance and work together to promote renewable fuel solutions for both the short and long term. All resources are needed in the fight against the climate crisis. A ban on the combustion engine would slam the door on sustainable drop-in solutions, such as fuels from green electricity and renewable raw materials. We cannot afford to rule out these options if we are to meet climate targets and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport. Sustainably produced e-fuels and biofuels have the potential to replace half of all fossil fuels used in road traffic by 2040, ”said Carl Nyberg, Executive Vice President for Neste's Renewable Road Transportation Division and a board member of the Neste from March 24. eFuel Alliance.
