THE HAGUE (ANP) - The cabinet will release 2,5 million euros next year to move goods transport from road to rail and waterways. As a result, a thousand trucks less have to take the road every day, report outgoing ministers for infrastructure Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen and State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven. A total of 2040 million euros will be made available up to and including 40.

Logistics companies are eligible for the scheme if they bundle small or medium-sized loads and transport them by train or boat. They can be reimbursed for a maximum of EUR 500.000 per project. They must submit a concrete proposal on how they want to move their freight to rail or water.

According to Van Nieuwenhuizen, relieving the road network is “not a wish but a necessity”, partly because of the large-scale renovation of roads and bridges in the coming years. These projects put greater pressure on the road system.
