Half of the electric city bikes in the Netherlands are insured. An estimated 1,9 million e-bikes would thus be covered by insurance, reports research agency Multiscope. This questioned thousands of Dutch people aged 18 and older for a large-scale study into electric bicycles.

Insured persons are usually women, over 50 with an income of twice the average or more. A larger share of hybrid and mountain bikes is insured (69 percent). This percentage is 58 percent for electric cargo bikes, folding bikes and tricycles.

People with an electric city bike most often take out their insurance through the ANWB (20 percent), followed by ENRA, Unigarant and Kingpolis. Insurance costs about nine euros per month, bringing the annual market value to about 214 million euros.

Seven percent of owners of an electric city bike, cargo bike, folding bike, tricycle or speed pedelec have stolen an e-bike. In two percent of the cases, an e-bike was stolen more than once. For owners of an electric mountain bike or hybrid bike, this percentage is higher, at 8 percent.
