Rotterdam is a real cycling city, everywhere you see bicycles parked and cyclists riding. More and more people use the bicycle instead of the car. This is much easier, you can get close to your location without having to look for a parking garage first. This means that there are too few bicycle parking spaces in Rotterdam. This is a problem especially in the city center. The municipality of Rotterdam will change this and will expand the number of bicycle parking spaces in the coming years. The plan is to build 1100 bicycle parking spaces around Rotterdam Central Station by the summer.

“Rotterdam is growing and that is noticeable by more cyclists in the city. That means not only more space on the road, but also more possibilities to park the bicycle, ”said alderman Judith Bokhove.

More places are also being created in the city center, including at Karel Doormanstraat, Kruiskade and Westblaak, 200 extra temporary bicycle parking spaces will be built this month. There will probably also be extra bicycle parking spaces in a building on the Coolsingel and under the Schouwburgplein in 2024. An empty shop on the Lijnbaan is being converted into a temporary extra bicycle shed, which will probably open in June or July. This bicycle shed can accommodate 450 bicycles. Rotterdam expects more cyclists in the coming years, in 2030 they expect to need more than 60.000 bicycle parking spaces, and in 2040 even nearly 75.000. The municipality of Rotterdam the number of bicycle parking spaces will expand to meet this increasing demand.
