NS prefers to have outdated trains modernized instead of buying new trains right away. Renovation of a train is cheaper than buying a new train. Trains can often last for years after a renovation. In the coming years 45 trains will be modernized. Most train renovation work takes place at Train modernization Haarlem. Recently, a new production department (De Kabelstraat) was opened at Train Modernization Haarlem for employees with a work disability and a distance from the labor market. In this department, cable bundles are made for 45 Intercity double-deckers, among others. There are approximately 20 kilometers of cables per train.

“We are happy with our new 'Kabelstraat' and new colleagues. Previously this work was outsourced, now we are going to do it ourselves with a club of highly motivated, new colleagues selected from the Target Group Register of the municipality of Haarlem and supervised by Pasmatch. For example, we will soon have short lines of communication with other departments, which will make us more flexible in the work on the production line. In addition, we create new positions for employees who are at a distance from the labor market. As a company with a major social role, we find this very important ”, says Hans Seegers, director of NS Treinmodernization.

This project is an initiative of NS together with the municipality of Haarlem and Pasmatch. Pasmatch mediates for jobseekers at a distance from the labor market. It was preceded by careful preparation before this department opened. Employees of NS Treinmodernization who are going to supervise these new colleagues have received special training to supervise these new colleagues. In recent weeks, a trial run has been conducted to see how everything is going. The work instructions and certification have now been completed, according to the NS.

Pasmatch director Jeroen Coops: “The project is a wonderful example of regional and local cooperation with inclusive employment. NS Train Modernization Haarlem is one of the oldest and largest employers in the Haarlem region. Fully filling a new work department with employees at a distance from the labor market is unique.
