The annual national traffic campaign has recently been launched to help motorists keep to the speed limit, especially in built-up areas and on provincial roads. Motorists do not keep to the speed limits here. Forty to sixty percent of motorists even regularly drive too fast. One third of all fatal road accidents are partly caused by speeding, according to the Institute for Road Safety Research (SWOV). The campaign is mainly aimed at drivers who speed 10 to 15 kilometers. Such small exceedances can have major consequences, especially in built-up areas. On 30, 50 and 60 km roads, the most interaction takes place between motorists and vulnerable road users and the dangers are greatest.

"Speeding is a major cause of traffic accidents, including fatalities. Every accident is one too many. So avoid speeding, check your speed regularly."

At a higher speed, the braking distance is longer, the reaction time shorter and a collision harder. At 40 km per hour, for example, the braking distance of a car is over 6 meters longer than at 30. On a wet road it is another 2 meters. In addition, the campaign also advises drivers to slow down when the situation calls for it, such as in the vicinity of a school, when it is busy or in bad weather. People often drive too fast unconsciously. In addition to municipalities, provinces and the ministry, other parties also contribute to the campaign. Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) offers residents the means to campaign in their own neighborhood and has an online knowledge quiz. Team Alert focuses on young inexperienced road users, according to the National government.
