Society is slowly being opened up a bit again according to a step-by-step plan from our government. Maybe soon, if the infections continue to decrease, we will be able to go back on vacation, to the amusement park and out for dinner. More and more people will also use public transport. In the past, train tickets were often for sale at, for example, the Kruidvat, Hema or Blokker with a substantial discount. This was a while ago because due to the consequences of the corona crisis, traveling by train was only for necessary things. The Dutch Railways reports that they will be offering three new discount tickets around the summer so that travelers can travel by train more cheaply. The Dutch Railways has come up with this strategy to keep train travel affordable and to attract travelers who have stayed away due to the consequences of the corona crisis.

“Due to corona, a significant proportion of our regular travelers do not now choose the train. If we, as a country, want to achieve our climate goals, we cannot do so without a major role for public transport. It is therefore a top priority for us, but also for the Netherlands, to get the traveler back on the train. We do this by scaling up our timetable and by focusing on pressure distribution so that travelers have a comfortable journey. With these new train tickets we make the train attractive again for many people. Not only for commuters, but also for day trips. Take our renewed group ticket, with which we expect couples and families to choose the train more often instead of the car for a day out. ”

There will be 3 types of discount tickets, these tickets are also valid with other train operators and only valid during off-peak hours. With this, NS wants to prevent everyone taking the train at the same time, for example during rush hour. The first type is the early bird ticket: an e-ticket (single or return) that gives you a ten percent discount in off-peak hours when you purchase the ticket at least four days in advance. The second type is a six-ride ticket: an e-ticket with which you can make six trips during off-peak hours on a fixed route with a twenty percent discount. It is possible to travel in both directions on the route and you have six months to make the trips. And the third type is an adapted group ticket: with the new group ticket, travelers from two or three people can make a one-way trip to any station in the Netherlands for € 32,00 during off-peak hours. At the moment, this is only possible from four people. The amount to bring an extra person will be increased, from € 2,00 to € 3,00. Also comes NS with new subscriptions for employers that are geared to the new travel behavior of employees.
