The new holiday park 'Terhills Resort by Center Parcs' in Dilsen-Stokkem was officially opened in the presence of Flemish minister Lydia Peeters. The resort with its 250 luxury cottages, together with the Terhills Cablepark, Elaisa Wellness, the Terhills Hotel and Maasmechelen Village, forms a unique destination for both tourists and residents of the region. The Terhills site does not only focus on tourist and recreational development, but is also a testing ground for smart mobility.

LRM, De Lijn and Flanders Make will test electrically powered self-driving shuttles at this location on a closed mobility loop of 2,5 km. There is a need for digitization, automation and innovation to provide an answer to the mobility challenges of the future. Self-driving vehicles will be part of the mobility mix in the future and will ensure that the quality of shared transport increases significantly. From her policy domain, Minister Peeters is investing 418.000 euros in this project.

“Terhills can be seen as a small 'city' in the middle of nature and makes Limburg a testing ground for smart and innovative mobility projects such as autonomous vehicles. In the future, this will contribute to more sustainable and climate-friendly mobility in Flanders”, explains Lydia Peeters, Flemish Minister of Mobility. “These developments and projects regarding connected and autonomous vehicles and the associated MaaS application offer great opportunities for safer and smoother traffic.”

In dialogue the cycling and walking routes were further optimized with all stakeholders. For example, you can opt for a route of 3,6 km that takes you over the long slag heap to the panorama point in one hour.

A 5,4 km route to the viewpoint, but also around the Terhills Cable Park waterhole or the 9,5 km route that goes all the way around the large pond, offering you a beautiful panorama of both the long slag heap and the twin slag heap. This also partly goes through the new Terhills Resort.

Plans are currently being worked out for a walking & cycling pontoon over the water, which will provide an extra experience.
