Despite the fact that there seems to be a good chance that a flying holiday will soon be possible again, many holidaymakers still opt for a camping holiday in their own country. 2021 promises to be another great year. At first the weather was still against us, but in the past week it was suddenly full of summer, which was massively benefited. You will probably have to look for another open space on a nice campsite, but ... once found, the fun will be splashed. When last year the campsites were allowed to open again after 15 June, that was a good reason for holidaymakers to look for an alternative.

Flight holidays were not possible and due to the closed borders, the holiday destination did not become the Spanish Costa, Italy or any other country. An obvious and massively followed alternative was to buy a camping equipment yourself; this resulted in a run on camping and caravanning companies, which posted record sales. The SVR campsites – at least in the Netherlands – also set records: from July to September, almost six million Dutch people celebrated their holiday in the Netherlands. Many of them discovered the charms of the SVR farm campsites there: coronaproof, with open sanitary buildings or even private sanitary facilities.

Hopeful Expectations

Although there are hopeful expectations in the fight against the coronavirus and even the date of September 1 is referred to as D-day, the Netherlands is once again orienting itself towards a summer within the national borders. The Free Recreation Foundation (SVR) is inundated with registrations from new donors (recreationists), while several independent, small-scale campsites also register as participants in the SVR organization. “The latter comes in handy,” says SVR secretary Kloosterman, “because 2021 promises to be another great year with even more campers.”

Holiday abroad

The SVR campsites abroad are also eagerly awaiting the arrival of guests. The last 12 months have been disastrous in terms of revenue, but it has also been a useful period to give extensive refurbishment to areas of the site where necessary. For example, those campsites are now fully prepared to allow guests from their own country or from other European countries onto their site again and – although some holidaymakers still have doubts about whether or not to travel abroad – foreigners hope to SVR campsites will certainly welcome the Dutch camper again this summer.

SVR 50th anniversary celebration postponed to 2025

Despite the positive messages and hopeful expectations for the coming summer, but also the uncertainty about the consequences of all the upcoming relaxations, the board of the SVR I am of the opinion, however, that it would not be wise to continue the previously postponed Jubilee party “50 years of SVR” this year (and so immediately after that D-day of September 1st). It has been decided to postpone the party to September 2025, when the Foundation will be 55 years old.
