From 1 July 2021, recognized garages must register the mileage of motorcycles. Mandatory registration provides the buyer with reliable information about odometer readings of engines and fraud with odometer readings is reduced. Recognized garages must register the odometer readings of all vehicles registered as motorcycles and which may be driven with a motorcycle license with the RDW. This also applies to tricycles, such as trikes.

Registration is required in the following cases:

  • When included in company stock
  • At the ascription
  • For repairs, maintenance and tire changes (no minimum amount)
  • When unsubscribing from export
  • When deregistering for disassembly (optional

Preventing Fraud

The registration should prevent economic fraud and improve road safety. An engine with a rolled back odometer is more expensive to purchase and maintain. That is because the engine has then driven more kilometers than the mileage indicates and necessary maintenance is often linked to that mileage

Insight into meter readings

The information on motorcycle odometer readings will be available from July 1, 2021. For example, when selling their motorcycle, owners/holders can offer potential buyers an overview of registered odometer readings (for example with the RDW Vehicle Report).

Register more often with cars and company cars

The odometer readings of passenger cars and commercial vehicles have been registered for some time. From July 1, 2021, this will be done even more often because companies must register the odometer reading with every repair, maintenance or tire change. Now this is only mandatory for an amount from 150 euros. As a result, even more odometer readings are registered for these vehicles. This creates a more complete overview of the counter readings at different times. Counter registration of motorcycles is a wish of the motorcycle industry, the Association to Tackle Counter Fraud and the government. The RDW manages the register of odometer readings and provides an overview in the RDW Vehicle Report based on that information.
