Since last Monday, the NS has been using all night trains again, which means that tens of thousands of extra travelers are on their feet at night. It was especially busier on Saturday and Sunday nights, according to figures from public transport chip card company Translink.

In the night from Friday to Saturday, the Dutch checked in 34.000 times with their public transport chip card at a train, bus, metro or tram between 00.00:05.00 and 29.000:XNUMX. That is a more than fourfold increase compared to a week earlier. In the night from Saturday to Sunday it came to XNUMX check-ins, which is three times more than a week earlier. An increase can also be seen on Sunday nights and on weekdays, although the numbers are smaller.

Due to the outbreak of the corona virus, the NS used fewer night trains for months. Last Monday, the full nighttime schedule went back to the old one. The carrier did this because the Dutch had more options to go out due to a relaxation of the corona measures. The night trains run on the Amsterdam-Haarlem, Utrecht-Amersfoort, Nijmegen-Utrecht and Rotterdam-Eindhoven-Utrecht routes. The nightlife trains in the Randstad were already running.

Due to the increasing number of corona infections, the government has reversed many of the relaxations for nightlife on Saturday morning at 06.00:XNUMX. From then on, catering had to close at midnight and discotheques and nightclubs had to close their doors again. So the question is how busy the coming weekend will be in public transport.

Despite the increased crowds, it is still much quieter at night on public transport than before the coronavirus outbreak. Saturday night it was half as quiet at night compared to 2019.
