The ANWB campsite inspectors will inspect hundreds of affiliated campsites this summer. Last year, due to the corona pandemic, only Dutch campsites were visited, but in the coming high season, a large number of European campsites will also be inspected, as before. Many Dutch people are looking forward to going on holiday this year. Camping is very popular, especially with families with young children. Due to the corona pandemic, interest in camping has increased considerably, according to an earlier ANWB study. Positive travel advice has now been issued for many popular camping countries. The ANWB inspectors visit campsites in the most popular camping countries for which a green or yellow travel advice applies. In the high season, surprise visits will be made to campsites in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Croatia. Campsite owners almost always respond positively to this. During the inspection, the most diverse aspects are discussed, from the facilities on and around the site to the quality of the sanitary facilities.

An extensive checklist is used to score on five items: swimming, terrain, sanitary facilities, food and drink and recreation. Campsites can achieve a total score of up to five stars. The campsites that earn this total score are often larger campsites with many good quality facilities. However, this does not mean that campsites with three or fewer stars are unsuitable. These are often smaller campsites that, although they have fewer facilities, meet the needs of select groups of campers. Thousands of Dutch campers have been relying on the ANWB campsite ratings since the 80s, according to the ANWB on their website.
