American tourists will soon no longer be able to travel to the European Union just like that. The EU countries have agreed to tighten travel rules for the US, among others, because the corona virus is spreading there again. In June, EU member states agreed to re-admit American pleasure travelers, who make a lot of money from the tourism industry in Europe. That should give the hard-hit industry a boost.

The US, in turn, promised to clear the way for the arrival of EU citizens, but nothing has happened yet. Non-essential travel from Israel, Lebanon, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo will also be restricted, EU countries agreed on Monday. No Member State objected to the new arrangement.

In practice, an EU country can deviate from this. For example, member states can continue to admit American tourists who can prove they have been vaccinated. But that is difficult, because the US does not have an official national corona pass. The number of corona patients who died in August is at more than 24.000 at the highest level since March.
