The Fietsstad 2022 survey is closed with more than 48.000 respondents. Cyclists indicate that they do not enjoy cycling on roads shared with cars. But questions about scooters and mopeds on the cycle path, bicycle theft and the safety of children cycling to school were also poorly answered.

Cyclists do not like roads on which they have to drive together with cars. This is apparent from the public survey for the Bicycle City 2022 election, which was concluded this week. In the provinces of North Holland and South Holland in particular, people do not enjoy cycling on roads that they have to share with cars. A total of 48.986 people gave their opinion about the cycling climate in the Netherlands to the Fietsersbond. This is the basis for the ranking that will be announced in June next year.

"It is not surprising that cyclists do not feel comfortable sharing the road with cars. Cars drive fast and cyclists often feel unsafe. That is why we continue to insist on lower speeds in built-up areas and more separate bicycle paths."

more representative

The number of surveys submitted this year is higher than two years ago. More importantly, for the first time, sufficient surveys have been completed in all municipalities to arrive at a good national picture of the cycling climate. Bicycle City 2022 is therefore more representative than ever. Esther van Garderen is therefore more than satisfied.

“It's great that so many people have expressed their opinion about cycling in the Netherlands. This gives us a very good idea of what cyclists actually think, and that's where it starts. All municipalities will soon be able to see how their residents feel on the bicycle path, and ensure that that feeling becomes even better.”

The large number of surveys is due to the efforts of hundreds of Fietsersbond volunteers throughout the Netherlands, but also to the enthusiastic responses from municipalities and partners of the Cycling City, such as main sponsor Gazelle.

“Thanks to this research, we will soon be able to see what can be done even better on the Dutch bicycle paths, so that everyone continues to cycle happily.”

Awarding in 2022

The questions from the survey will be supplemented by the Fietsersbond with objective factors in the coming months. The successor to Veenendaal (Bicycle City 2) will be announced on June 2022, 2020 during the National Bicycle Congress in Enschede. Prior to this congress, other prizes will be awarded locally to the winner of a large municipality, winner of a medium-sized municipality, winner of a small municipality and the municipality of Scherpenzeel will pass on the trophy for best climber compared to 2020, according to the Fietsersbond
