It is very busy on the roads around Arnhem, unfortunately being in traffic jams is a daily occurrence here. For that reason, the A12 Smart Travel has been created by the business community, governments, educational institutions and other organizations from the A12 region. With the A12 Smart Travel, travelers are encouraged to travel differently on the A12 route to the German border. This different travel is for example by checking your route in advance for crowds and working from home where possible, traveling at different times or via a different route and opting for other transport than the car.

'It is very busy again on the A12 around Duiven and Westervoort and the traffic jams are back as usual. We are almost back to the level before corona, with around 65.000 vehicles driving over the IJssel bridges in the A12 towards Arnhem every day. The highway is too full. Commuters, business traffic, tourism, transport and logistics: we can all contribute to the solution. To avoid traffic jams, it is enough if about 10 to 15 percent of this traffic stays away from rush hour.'

This different travel is for example by checking your route in advance for crowds and working from home where possible, traveling at different times or via a different route and opting for other transport than the car. You can view the interactive map on the A12 Slim Reizen website before you have to hit the road. Here you can see exactly when it is busy or not and what the possible alternatives are on the route. For example, you can find carpool places, Park + Ride locations, public transport stations, e-hubs, fast cycle routes and public transport cycle locations. You can see for yourself how many public transport bicycles are available at one place.

'It also pays off for companies in transport and logistics to coordinate travel times with the expected crowds,' says Faessen. 'From the end of 2021, companies will be able to load the traffic forecast into their own planning software. In addition, companies can also receive an overview of the expected crowds in their mailbox every day.'
