Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters today emphasized in the Mobility Committee of the Flemish Parliament the ambition to phase out fossil fuel cars by 2029. “Given the Belgian division of competences, we are asking federal colleagues to phase out passenger cars and vans with fossil combustion engines,” said Minister Peeters. “In particular, we ask that from January 1, 2029, new cars can only be registered if they are zero-emissions.”

Charging infrastructure

Minister Peeters is also ambitious in terms of charging infrastructure. “We aim for 100.000 (semi-)public charging equivalents by 2030. The local authorities are an important partner here.” A CPO (Charge point operator) will be appointed per region who is responsible for installing charging infrastructure, which the local authorities can call upon.

Old-timers have a special status and are treated as such.

For this purpose, potential maps are also drawn up in which all relevant information regarding the determination of charging locations and potential is mapped out. Citizens who do not have a driveway or garage can request a charging station via Paal follows Wagen when they buy an electric car. This system will be operational by April at the latest.

“In addition, we also provide financial support for companies that open up their private charging infrastructure to the public and for those who invest in ultra-fast charging infrastructure along the major traffic axes. For example, my recent call for projects for semi-public charging infrastructure translates into 9798 charging equivalents that will be operational within two years. In the near future, at least 1700 charging equivalents of (ultra) fast charging infrastructure will also be added along the highways and busy regional roads. In this way, everyone can always charge quickly and nearby by having charging facilities in Flanders at least every 25 km.”

Also, in order to tackle the further transition to an electric vehicle fleet in a coordinated way, a transition manager electrification mobility will be appointed to facilitate horizontal cooperation across the various policy domains (mobility, energy, climate, environment, fiscal and financial) and levels (European, federal , regional, transport regional, provincial and local). The transition manager will also monitor whether the necessary conditions for the policy are achieved and whether or not objectives need to be adjusted somewhere.

Oldtimers

Flemish minister Peeters: “Old-timers have a special status and are treated as such. They already have plenty of exceptions, this will also be sooh stay. They are not registered as a utility vehicle and also have a special registration number. As far as I am concerned, their special status is therefore not endangered.”
