On January 1, a new phase of the neighborhood circulation plan in Sint-Niklaas will come into effect and access will be controlled with cameras for automatic number plate recognition (ANPR). On that date, the traffic filters, monitored by smart cameras, will come into effect in Goudenregenlaan, at the intersection with Hogenakkerstraat, and in Breedstraat, at the intersection with Magnolialaan. In addition, the newly constructed Collegestraat and Kroonmolenstraat will be car-free. It is a new step in the implementation of the district circulation plan with the aim of increasing traffic quality.

smart solution

With these smart cameras, badges or resident cards are no longer needed and the sometimes annoying retractable posts can disappear from the public space. In fact, nothing will change for the residents of the streets concerned. The number plate of the vehicle, for which they now have a resident card, is transferred directly to the database of the smart cameras. The cameras are also less prone to defects and therefore more reliable. Residents of residential streets in the vicinity of the traffic filters can apply for a permit to drive through the filter. This also applies to some specific target groups, such as health care providers, security services, waste collectors and utility companies.

On January 1, the traffic filters, controlled by smart cameras, will come into effect

Based on the vision of the neighborhood circulation plan, it is the intention that residential areas are reached via the correct approach road. For the residential streets in the vicinity of Lindenstraat and Breedstraat and in the Priesteragiewijk, this is either Antwerpse Steenweg or Glycinenplein. To enforce the use of the correct approach road, we will activate two traffic filters on 1 January. The passage is monitored with smart cameras.

As a result, cut-through traffic will no longer be possible are in Lindenstraat and Breedstraat and it will also become safer and more pleasant for cyclists and pedestrians.

Residents of residential streets in the vicinity of the traffic filters can obtain a permit to drive through the filter. This also applies to some specific target groups, such as health care providers, security services, waste collectors and utility companies. The application is made online via www.sint-niklaas.be/driving permit.
