It probably sounds like music to our ears to many of us, traveling for free on public transport. Wouldn't this be the solution for, for example, our congestion and nitrogen problems? For some people, this free bus travel is available. Eindhoven residents who are 18 years or older and have a low income can apply for the Participation Contribution up to and including 31 December. Eindhoven residents who qualify for the Participation Contribution can register to travel by bus for free for a year. This contribution is an amount of money that you receive once a year from the municipality and that you can spend freely on, for example, sports, hobbies, parental contributions or on school supplies. If this Participation Contribution has been awarded, you can also claim free bus travel and request this online from the municipality. These people can then travel for free on certain bus lines from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am. They can leave whenever they want on weekends and holidays.

It was also recently announced that from January 1, 2022, all children aged 4 to 11 who are registered in Rotterdam can travel for free on public transport in the city as a trial. If they have registered for this trial, these children may use the RET buses, trams and metros for free and travel freely through Rotterdam. This trial 'free public transport for children' was created by alderman Judith Bokhove. If this trial proves to be a success, the alderman wants to permanently introduce free public transport for Rotterdam children. Rotterdam is the first city in the Netherlands to allow free use of public transport. The aim of this trial is to encourage the use of public transport.
