The new cabinet wants road pricing to be introduced in due course. The coalition agreement of VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie states that the cabinet wants to reduce CO2 emissions and that road pricing can contribute to this. The introduction of road pricing does not automatically mean that only the polluter will pay by 2030.

Under the agreement, both users of electric and fossil cars will pay for road use. In the current cabinet term, the foundation is being laid for the new system in which the rate for motor vehicle tax is dependent on the number of kilometers driven annually.

According to the authors, the levy is not bound by time and place. Paying according to use will replace the toll routes that still exist at that time, such as the Westerscheldetunnel, the Kiltunnel and the planned extended A15.
