To make it easier for professional drivers to check whether code 95 is necessary, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) has developed a Code 95 regulation aid. People who want to become a professional truck or bus driver must obtain the code 95 (basic qualification). Sometimes professional drivers are exempt from this obligation.

Code 95

Professional drivers who have passed the theory and practical exams can have the code 95 (basic qualification) added to their driving license C, C1, D or D1. The code 95 is valid for 5 years. Every 5 years, the driver can renew the code 95 by following refresher courses. This is regulated in the Professional Competence Directive.

The Code 95 regulation aid can be found on the ILT website. The ILT developed the regulation aid because it receives many questions about the exemptions. For example, firefighters and police officers do not need code 95. Code 95 is also not required to drive a truck or bus for private purposes. By answering a number of questions, the driver quickly finds out whether the code 95 is necessary, or whether the driver falls under an exemption, according to the inspection of living environment and transport
