With 383.123 new cars registered in 2021, the Belgian car market registered a decrease of -11,2% compared to an already disrupted year 2020. New cars were mainly registered by companies and in the Flemish Region. According to Automotive Federation Febiac In 2021, the new car market was dominated by professional customers, who together registered almost 6 out of 10 new cars. Private individuals' market share has fallen from 43,6% in 2020 to 40,3% in 2021.

shortages

Electrified cars have made a historic breakthrough, reaching levels comparable to diesel cars for the first time, and the average CO2 emissions of new cars have never been lower. Manufacturers' order books appear to be well filled, but production capacity is under pressure from global semiconductor shortages across sectors. After a year 2020 heavily impacted by Covid-19, the automotive sector now faces a new challenge: the on-time production and delivery of the new vehicles that customers order.

The automotive sector invests heavily in the development and commercialization of electrified vehicles. This is reflected not only in the number of new car registrations, but also in the ever-growing range of different models. At the end of 2021, 70 different BEV models and 87 different PHEV models were for sale in Belgium. As a result of the increased popularity of BEV and PHEV engines among companies, new commercial vehicles registered in 2021 logically have much lower average CO2 emissions than new cars registered by private individuals.

cost price

You can hardly find an electric car for less than 20.000 euros. On the other hand, electric cars are cheaper to maintain. Yet this remains a difficult sales pitch when a diesel and the petrol car in the same showroom is thousands of euros cheaper. According to Febiac, the lack of charging infrastructure in Belgium also puts a brake on the advance of the BEV. Febiac especially denounces the situation in Brussels and Wallonia, because the majority of public charging stations are located in Flanders. According to the manufacturers, the cost price of electric cars will fall if there are more charging points.
