Ordering online is an indispensable part of our society. Everywhere you see the vans of parcel deliverers. Waiting for our packages, we all know it, and it also regularly stresses us out. Will that package arrive in time for that birthday you have to go to this week? Last month we were suddenly in a lockdown just before the holidays and this lasted until January 14th. All non-essential stores were closed. So there was no fun shopping for the holidays. Only ordering, collection and return was possible. This lockdown just before the holidays caused an extra explosion in online orders. Where 'normally' it is already quite busy for parcel deliverers in December, it was now completely unprecedentedly busy.

People have been spending more money online for years and because of the lockdown last month, there were many more online orders and the pressure on webshops was only higher. It was quite a challenge for shops to get all packages to people's homes on time. Despite this busyness due to the lockdown in December and therefore more online orders, more orders were delivered on time compared to December 2020. This is apparent from a survey by Q&A. In 2021 for Sinterklaas, slightly more than four percent of the packages were delivered late and this was almost seven percent before Christmas. In 2020, the Netherlands also went into lockdown, which was already on December 15. At that time, the number of late deliveries was about twenty to thirty percent higher than last December. This result has been achieved by the consumers ordering the packages on time and by good cooperation between web shops, DHL, PostNL and drivers.
