In 2022, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) will check whether car dealers assign a valid energy label to new passenger cars. The energy label provides insight into fuel consumption, the economy category and CO2 emissions. Consumers can take these aspects into account when choosing a new car.

More than 40% did not meet the obligation in 2021

In 2021, the ILT carried out national inspections at 285 car dealers. At that time, 42% of the car dealers inspected had no energy label or an incorrect energy label. The shortcomings varied: there was no energy label, a wrong label, a label with the wrong colors or an overview poster was missing. The car dealers concerned received a written warning from the inspectorate. In 2022, the ILT will check car dealers again.

Energy efficient

The energy label shows, among other things, how much fuel a new car consumes compared to other cars in the same class. The aim of the label is to encourage the use of energy-efficient cars.

Valid energy label

The energy label must be linked to the vehicle. In addition, the label must be printed in mandatory colours. A poster must also be present in the showroom near the vehicles on offer, with an overview of all vehicles of the relevant brand and the associated energy labels.

Market supervisor

De ILT is, among other things, market supervisor for Directive 1999/94/EC and the Decree on the labeling of energy consumption for passenger cars. This states that an energy label must be present when new passenger cars (not yet sold to consumers) are sold. This also applies to imported vehicles that have not yet been sold to a consumer. Special purpose vehicles are not covered, such as fire and armored vehicles, two or three wheel vehicles and used cars. Fully electric vehicles and commercial vehicles are also an exception, according to the ILT.
