The Dutch miss warm summer temperatures by far the most when spending their holiday in their own country. Discovering a new culture and the feeling of being away from home for a while in second and third place. Nevertheless, more than two thirds of the Dutch plan to go on holiday in their own country more often.

That appears from research from holiday platform Park Holidays. No less than 58 percent of the Dutch say that they miss pleasant summer weather on holiday in the Netherlands. A mountainous environment, white sandy beaches and foreign food also score highly with many Dutch people. Only 14 percent do not miss anything on holiday in the Netherlands.

For almost a quarter of the Dutch, the need to go on holiday abroad is greater than before corona.

More in our own country on holiday

Strikingly enough, 61 percent of Dutch people plan to go on holiday more in their own country in the coming years. Moreover, 40 percent have started to look more positively at the Netherlands as a holiday destination. “We have rediscovered the Netherlands and have come to realize that it is a great place to stay in our own country,” says Laurens Taekema of Parkvakanties.

Almost half of the Dutch people have been on holiday in the Netherlands more often than usual because of corona. Limburg is the most popular province to go on holiday, followed by Drenthe and Gelderland. “We are clearly looking for nature and beautiful places in the Netherlands,” says Taekema.

Rush at holiday parks

Last year there was a real run on holiday parks in our own country and now that the new year has arrived, Park Holidays has again recorded a massive increase in the number of bookings, +42 percent compared to the same period last year. Taekema: “Not only for the summer holidays or spring break, there are also plenty of weekend breaks and short breaks booked. There is still sufficient availability, but if you want to go on holiday to a specific holiday park or luxury house during the high season, it is better not to wait too long before booking.”

Holiday homes more expensive

Research by Parkvakanties showed that the prices for a bungalow at a holiday park rose on average by 8 to 13 percent last year. Parkvakanties does not expect such a price increase for 2022. Taekema: “The prices have been at a consistently high level since then and will only increase by 2 to 3 percent this year.”
