On the day that radio DJs Sander Lantinga and Gerard Ekdom gave the go-ahead at 06.00:555 for the national day of action of Giro278 Together in action for Ukraine, KLM announced that the vast majority of the XNUMX stranded Ukrainians that the airline has collected from the Dominican Republic, does not remain in the Netherlands. Most people who fled have chosen to continue their journey to Poland or Ukraine, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) said.

It concerns Ukrainian holidaymakers who could no longer go home because of the war in Ukraine. They landed at Schiphol on Saturday afternoon, NH Nieuws already reported. A KLM spokeswoman explains that this is a one-off action. KLM heard that many Ukrainians had been stranded and happened to have another plane nearby. That aircraft had stayed behind in Trinidad and Tobago for repairs and was supposed to fly back to the Netherlands empty. Then contact was made with a local Ukrainian embassy and KLM offered to take people to Europe.

Spread across the world there are probably many more Ukrainian and also Russian travelers who want to return home but are unable to do so due to the war and sanctions against Russian aviation. According to the spokeswoman of KLM, it is not often that there is just an empty plane somewhere nearby. If there were a request to take stranded travelers again, it would be "depending on the circumstances" whether KLM can help.

According to the IND, the Ukrainians who came with the flight may also remain in the Netherlands for the time being if they wish. Then they could, for example, stay with family or acquaintances. They can also be accommodated in a shelter near Harskamp in the municipality of Ede. A spokeswoman for the IND cannot indicate whether there are also people from the flight who, on reflection, have opted for the latter option.
