"There is also a point of criticism. The truck tax will only be introduced in the course of 2026."

Interest groups from the transportThe sector are pleased that the bill for the introduction of the truck tax has been passed by the House of Representatives. With this levy, transport companies pay for the use of company cars above 3,5 tons in proportion to their use of Dutch roads. The net proceeds of that tax flow back to the transport sector as financing for making the world more sustainable transport across the road.

TLN, the business organization for road transport, says it is pleased with the outcome. The revenues from the truck levy can help make freight transport more sustainable. In addition, TLN is pleased that attention was drawn to sufficient charging points for electric trucks via a motion.

The RAI Association, which among other things represents importers of trucks, is pleased that the level of the truck tax also takes into account the CO2 emissions per truck. This encourages the use of cleaner trucks.

There is also a point of criticism. The truck tax will not be introduced until 2026. According to TLN, it will therefore take a long time before revenues from road tax for trucks go to making goods transport more sustainable. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management still has to investigate what can help against the resulting financing gap.

After the introduction of the truck tax, the Eurovignette will be abolished, TLN reports. This is a certificate that shows that tax has been paid for a truck. In addition, the Netherlands lowers the motor vehicle tax as much as possible within the rules of the European Union.
