Everyone is saying that travel is getting more expensive.

Anyone who has already booked a package holiday for this summer will have to take into account significantly higher surcharges that can rise to EUR 90 per person. Due to the increased fuel costs, holiday travel providers are allowed to charge these extra costs. TUI, one of the largest providers of package holidays, always uses a variable price for package trips that can rise or fall depending on the fuel price. This year, according to TUI, this will lead to exceptionally serious price increases.

"A trip to the Spanish mainland can easily cost 70 euros more this summer, for a trip to Greece you pay around 90 euros per person."

The message in the Time is at odds with the research from Weflycheap. “Everything seems to be getting more expensive, but that doesn't work for package holidays (accommodation plus flight), Weflycheap says after research. "There is more deflation than inflation," says Eelko van Drongelen of the holiday comparator.

The price is now on average almost 5 percent lower than at the beginning of February, before the Ukraine war broke out. Compared to last May, the holiday is almost 3 percent cheaper. According to him, one of the explanations for the falling prices is the cutthroat competition between suppliers. In addition, tour operators have often already purchased the trips before, so that they themselves are less affected by price increases.

Frank Oostdam, chairman of the travel industry ANVR, recognizes the picture. “Everyone is saying that travel is getting more expensive, but I've been saying for some time that you can't put it that way. The price depends on many things: the destination, the period, type of accommodation. But also whether oil prices hedged or how big the competition is. And look at Turkey, where a lot of Russians are now staying away, that also has an effect on the price.”
